Papiere Bitte

I've spent many, many hours in converstaion with the lady who wrote this article, Doris, over the past year and a half. She is a really great lady and friend. I have watched and listened to the pain, the fear she has of once again seeing that which she fled as a child of 11: 1938 Nazi Germany. Last week a German immigrant of 86 publically announced he was returning to Gremany. He said that what he is seeing in the U.S. today he has seen before, and wishes not to see it again. We, the people of this country have the power to change this--we need only exercise it. And the sooner rather than later. (Jack)

Papiere Bitte
By: Doris Colmes

Those were the magic words of the time: “Papiere Bitte. (Translation: “Papers, Please.”) Hearing those words, even now, causes dull echoes of sounds akin to bodies hitting dirt, or bullets penetrating flesh to thud into my mind. Because, if those papers weren’t correctly in order, or, if you were a Jew sneakily present in any place (including the grocery store) which displayed the usual “NO JEWS OR DOGS ALLOWED” sign, you were dead meat--literally. And, yes, of course I’m talking about my childhood as a little Jewish kid in Nazi Germany.

No one ever forgets stench. Whether it is a long-forgotten encounter with a ripe skunk, or a ripe egg, or a ripe decomposing body, once one of those odors has been brain-documented, then even the slightest tinge of such an aroma pops back up immediately, along with the circumstances under which it first offended the nostrils.

And, that’s what’s happening now. I smell the long-forgotten skunk, the long-forgotten rot of fascism. What is happening all around can no longer be denied. . What I ran away from so desperately in 1938 is coming back full circle. Only the jack-boots have not yet arrived.

America quite literally saved my life. The love and gratitude deep in my heart for this country will never go away. But I’m scared now. Haunted by deep fear for the generations to come, who may wind up as I did – looking over their shoulders, scurrying for cover, mute with terror. And it hurts.

Think I’m some kinda elderly nut-job neurotically manufacturing dictatorship? Well, let’s look at the 82 billion dollar defense bill passed just a few weeks ago, which (with a vote tally of 100 to 0) had the Real ID Act hidden inside it. This law allows a national identification process in which each and every person in the U.S.A. will be on computer.

This ID will be based on driver’s license applications, although it isn’t just for driving. Just like the infamous “Internal Passport” of Nazi Germany, no one will need it unless needing to fly, cash checks, apply for jobs, walk the streets, enter federal buildings -- or drive. As stated in TIME magazine on May 15, 2005, “If you are a wealthy recluse with liquid assets, it doesn’t concern you.” Everyone else better watch out! Well, maybe that wealthy recluse had better watch out also. After all, he/she might be of a forbidden religion, or of suspicious racial origin.

Legal “ID Theft” and legal “illegal surveillance?” [1][1]”The Real ID Act links driver’s licenses of all states, creating a data base including the private details of
every single U.S. citizen. It mandates that your driver’s license share a common machine-readable digital photo of you, all the better to track your every movement. It hands the federal government unfunded mandate power to dictate what data all states must collect for license holders, including everything from fingerprints to retinal scans”. And, if you don’t drive, you’ll still need to submit to the national ID card. How else, after all, will the cop who doesn’t like the shape of your face, or the fact that you are (God Forbid) wearing a turban get to arrest you? Yes, “Papiere Bitte” has come home to roost.

And, folks, that’s only the beginning. More technically sophisticated techniques will be implemented as they occur. If the Nazis had had electronic surveillance, phone bugging and all else that the Patriot Act not only condones but advises, there would have been an even tighter grip on the populace.

After all, the Patriot Act is modeled directly after Gestapo methods: Those 3:00 AM home intrusions – without warrant or reason for arrest – will get our undesirable “domestic terrorists” straight to the nearest version of Guantanamo with no need for trial. The USA is currently building thirty seven “detention centers” nationwide, and they’ll soon be filled with persons who protest too much, or are simply of the wrong nationality. After all, it worked very well in Germany, successfully eliminating Jews, Gypsies, and anyone willing to stand up, and refuse to “Hail Hitler.”

What’s next? Well, it’s already happening: The Geneva Conventions were initiated after WW II to prevent the insane war crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated by Nazi Germany from ever happening again. Now, with blithe disregard of all of the above, the U.S.A. not only institutes torture (not just physical, but deliberately mental and emotional) on its prisoners, but actually exports these folks to countries in which such torture is governmentally approved. What the U.S. domestic prison system has kept hidden for years, is now right out there for everyone to applaud. How long it will take before the prison guards tie together the legs of a woman in labor and then make bets on how long it will take her to die? After all, that’s what guards did for fun in Nazi Germany. Abu Ghraib, anyone?

So, you ask, “If that’s all true, why doesn’t the media expose it all?” Now, that’s such a classic example of Nazi strategy, it’s almost funny. The Nazis took over the media, folks. No newspaper published a single sentence without governmental approval, and propaganda was fed to the populace instead of news. Sound familiar? A TIME magazine article, (April, 2005), gave illustrated examples of how the current administration administers this process.

And, last but certainly not least, the Nazis took over the German government in its entirety with one simple maneuver: They simply took over the courts. You know, like it’s happening right now, today, even as we speak: Our filibuster was busted, and those neo-con activist judges are a-sittin’ on the bench, ready to take over the Supreme Court. Because, once that Supreme Court is co-opted, hey, driver’s license ID cards are gonna be the least of our worries. Ask me. I know!

Infiltrating Bilderberg 2005

Infiltrating Bilderberg 2005

“The annual secret meeting of the Bilderberg group determines many of the headlines and news developments you will read about in the coming months. But the Establishment media completely black it out. With the exception of half-a-dozen high ranking members of the press who are sworn to secrecy, few have ever heard of the exclusive and secretive group called The Bilderbergers.”

Before you dismiss this as just another “conspiracy” theory, I suggest you take a serious and in-depth look at the material and information provided. What you will find if you do is simply this: the most powerful, most secretive group/organization on planet earth involved with the biggest conspiracy ever devised is the Bilderberg group.

Last year, after multiple readings of, “Who’s Who of the Elite” by Robert Gaylon Ross I wrote him and then we spoke over the phone. This was an incredible learning experience for me and one I am grateful for.

The research and information on and about the Bilderbergs provided by Tony Gosling on his web site, http://www.bilderberg.org/#mirror is the most complete I have seen to date. And I’ve been reading and studying everything I can get my hands on about this group for a long time now—it fills in the gaps left in Who’s Who of the Elite. While you may question some of his religious views, as do I, his research on the Bilderbergs is beyond reproach.

Because of the simple fact that in relatively short periods of time everything on the Bilderbergs mysteriously disappears from the internet, I strongly urge you to save this to your hard drive so as to give yourself the needed time to disseminate this information.

Make sure to look at the members of this from the U.S. Put this all in the context of the “New World Order” being articulated by selected individuals in and around Bush and company. Kissinger, Leeden, Luti, Pearle among others that are “advisors” to Bush are at the heart of this group.

Also take a look at the U.S. Political families, especially those that have occupied the presidency here in the past 100 years and put this all together. Look at the people that were behind the creation of the World Trade Organization. Put it all together and then you will have what I believe to be a better picture of what and who we are up against.

Yours in solidarity and peace

Dust Off the Nuremberg Files

by: Anwaar Hussain

At Nuremberg, in early October 1945, the four prosecuting nations -- the United States, Great Britain, France and Russia -- issued an indictment against 24 men and six organizations of the Nazi Germany. Of that 24 only 21 eventually sat down in the trial. The individual defendants were charged not only with the systematic murder of millions of people, but also with planning and carrying out the war in Europe. Twelve Nazi officials were sentenced to be hanged, three sentenced to life in prison, four were given prison sentences of 10-20 years, and the rest were acquitted.

Presently, the ongoing American and British slaughter of thousands of Iraqi and Afghan civilians constitutes a blatant war crime. Average legal skills should be able to prove that a similar case for the prosecution against the current coalition leaders can easily be constructed on comparable lines.

In September 2004, the incumbent UN Chief Kofi Annan made a very clear statement. Talking to BBC Annan said “the US-led invasion of Iraq was an illegal act that contravened the UN charter.” Being the UN Chief, and the custodian of International law, he should have known what he was talking about.

The consequent unlawful war of aggression, the killing of civilians and abuse of prisoners constitute war crimes as clearly as the UN Chief's statement.

Here are the Nuremberg Trial indictments.

The Nuremberg Trial Counts One & Two: Conspiracy to Wage Aggressive War and Waging Aggressive War. The "common plan or conspiracy" charge was designed to get around the problem of how to deal with crimes committed before the war. The defendants charged under Count One were accused of agreeing to commit crimes. Accusation for Count Two was defined in the indictment as "the planning, preparation, initiation, and waging of wars of aggression, which were also wars in violation of international treaties, agreements, and assurances."

Abundant evidence is now available that shows that leaders and advisers of the Bush and Blair administrations engaged in “planning, preparation, initiation or waging of a war of aggression.” Iraq posed no threat to either the United States or Britain. Its government had neither the means nor the intent of waging war against these countries; nor did it issue any threat to them. It possessed no WMDs.

The events now bear out that the US administration had plans ready well before the 9/11 crime to not only invade Iraq, but also target much if not all of the Middle East. Former CIA Director James Woolsey and presidential advisor David Gergen have confirmed that. The war of "Operation Iraqi Freedom," was planned well over a decade earlier. All alibis put forward by Bush administration for the Iraqi invasion, and the resultant near-genocidal massacre, have now been fully exposed as fraudulent motives.

In his book 'The Price of Loyalty', writer Ron Susskind disclosed that from the very beginning of the Bush administration, the President was scheming and contriving to launch a belligerent war against Iraq. Richard Clarke, Bush’s counter-terrorism expert, in his book 'Against All Enemies' confirmed the Bush administration’s fixation with attacking Iraq. He also noted down in his book, an insider’s view on the illegal planning, preparation and initiation of the war through the deliberate manipulation of intelligence.

Bob Woodward, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Watergate reporter, clearly establishes that just five days after 9/11, the President was clandestinely scheming to go after Saddam Hussein and not bin Laden – the man purportedly responsible for the 9/11 attacks. In particular, 72 days after 9/11, Bush ordered Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to draw up the secret war plans.

According to The Sunday Times, another fact recently come to light is that the Royal Air Force and the USAF doubled the rate at which they were dropping bombs at Iraq in 2002 in an attempt to provoke Saddam Hussein into giving the allies an excuse for war. The allies dropped twice as many bombs in the 2nd half of 2002 as they did during the whole of 2001. By end of August the raids had become a full air offensive.

These attacks were intensified from May 2002, six months before the November 8 2002 UN Resolution 1441 that Tony Blair and Lord Goldsmith argued gave the coalition the legal cover for war. These details follow the leak of minutes of a key meeting in July 2002 at which Blair and his war cabinet discussed how to make "regime change" in Iraq legal.

This new information and the Downing Street memo clearly show that the two leading coalition members, the US and Britain, were fully engaged in “planning, preparation, initiation or waging of a war of aggression” and "fixing" intelligence to suit these aims.

The Nuremberg Trial Counts Three and Four: War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity. These Counts addressed the charges of atrocities committed against humanity in the death camps, concentration camps and killing rampages like the indiscriminate bombing of civilian population centers.

According to various sources, as a result of this genocidal war, over 24,000 Iraqi civilians have died directly and over 120,000 indirectly. The Afghanistan toll on civilians is cited any where between 6,000 and 10,000.

Substantial evidence is now available that the Bush administration leaders, and military personnel following orders of these leaders, have committed “violations of the laws or customs of war,” including “murder . . . of civilian populations of or in occupied territory, murder or ill-treatment of prisoners of war . . . plunder of public or private property, wanton destruction of cities, towns, or villages, or devastation not justified by military necessity.” The perpetrators’ unjustifiable entreaties of military inevitability, of course, cannot free them of their actual crimes.

If all other war crimes could be argued against by legal wizardry, there is one crime of the coalition forces that is enough to surely sentence them ten times over for crimes against humanity. The use of depleted uranium weapons by the US armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan is as horrific a crime against humanity as there ever could be. This one crime takes its ghastly toll not just on the existing humanity, but successive generations continue to suffer for eons to come. A look here (too graphic, be warned) would confirm that the hideous beginning has already been made.

According to recent studies, the rate of birth defects, after increasing ten-fold from 11 per 100,000 births in 1989 to 116 per 100,000 in 2001, is soaring further. There have been 650 cases of birth deformities in total since August 2003 reported in government hospitals in Iraq. That is a 20% increase from the previous regime.

Also, a dreadful increase was registered in the rate of cancer among children under the age of 15 in southern Iraq from 1976 to 1999. In the province of Basra, the occurrence of cancer of all types rose by 242 percent, while the rate of leukemia among children rose 100 percent. Children living in the area were falling ill with cancer at the rate of 10.1 per 100,000. In districts where the use of DU had been the most concentrated, the rate rose to 13.2 per 100,000. Appalling as these results were then, the last six years have witnessed a further rise in the number of children under 15 falling ill with cancer in Iraq. The rate has now reached 22.4 per 100,000, more than five times the 1990 rate of 3.98 per 100,000.

The medical crisis is being directly blamed on the widespread use of depleted uranium (DU) munitions by the US and British forces in southern Iraq during the 1991 Gulf War, and the even greater use of DU during the 2003 invasion.

According to a August 2002 report by the UN sub commission, laws which are violated by the use of DU shells include: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; the Charter of the United Nations; the Genocide Convention; the Convention Against Torture; the four Geneva Conventions of 1949; the Conventional Weapons Convention of 1980; and the Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907, which expressly forbid employing 'poison or poisoned weapons' and 'arms, projectiles or materials calculated to cause unnecessary suffering'.

No legal genius, then, is required to indict George Bush, Tony Blair and a few other coalition leaders with violating:

* The United Nations Charter
* The 1945 Nuremberg Charter
* International humanitarian law
* The Geneva Conventions

The main indictments could be further buttressed by certain other charges.

There have been verifiable instances of offering inducements, coercing and threatening others, including the members of the United Nations Security Council, to support belligerent acts against Iraq. Moreover, there are speculations gaining momentum with each passing day that the incumbent US government itself was involved in the 9/11 crime. State leaders that conspire in the annihilation of their own citizens are the exact opposite of being instruments of rightful authority. They are, indeed, agents of unashamed criminality.

One problem remains though. And that is that it is always the vanquished that are supposed to have committed war crimes. The current accused are militarily so powerful that inflicting a military defeat on them by any power/combination of powers looks remote at the moment. Additionally, the ‘war on terror’ has been purposely made so elusive that the lines of legality are blurred enough to muddy the evidence of the crime. The only possible line of action seems to be an immediate impeachment of these leaders by their nations as a first step, followed by a swift recourse to international law after these leaders have been disinvested of their powers.

Noam Chomsky once said, "If the Nuremberg laws were applied, then every post-war American President would have been hanged." If that be the case then some now would be hung and then re-hung.Dust off the Nuremberg files ….I would say.

Update on: AfterDowningStreet

Here is an update on the “Smoking Gun Memos” from AfterDowningStreet.org. If we do not support anything else, it is an absolute must that we support this. That this nation was deceived and lied into invading and occupying Iraq is now beyond question. We cannot allow this issue of the very premise of war to become “disappeared” as have so many other issues of great importance to us, and the rest of the world by extension. We are in the grips of what is essentially a criminal enterprise disguised as the Bush Administration. Read on, and commit as much time and energy as you are possibly able in demanding answers and accountability from Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Feith, Bolton, Leeden, Pearle, and the rest of that marvelous mob of “Mayberry Machiavelli’s.”

This BushCo war of choice has turned the entire nation on its head. The social/political/economic damage done to us will last for decades even if this madness were to stop right now, today. A $491 billion bloated War Department budget--which does not include the $82 billion just approved for Iraq--is helping to create deficits so high that Newt Gingrich’s and Grover Norquist’s “policy” of “Starve the Beast” so as to eliminate all social spending by breaking the bank is well under way.

The cost in human lives behind this BushCo deception is, as far as I am concerned, more than enough to warrant putting the entirety of the BushCo administration on trial for not only war crimes, but crimes against humanity as well.

Evidence: Smoking Bullet in the Smoking Gun (http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/index.php )

A new London Times article cites evidence that in 2002, not only was a bogus case being concocted to help launch a war on Iraq, but a war had already been launched. The US and Britain dramatically increased their bombing of that country.

Learning to Say "NO" to the Military

By: Andrew Tonkovich: (the link to the LA Times article does not work)

(This is sound advice; and advice I hope everyone with children will seriously consider)

Twenty-five years ago, I printed a simple declarative statement on a Selective Service registration card. I was a kid but understood I would need to live by this gesture and those words: "I am a conscientious objector, opposed to participation in war in any form, because of my ethical, moral and religious beliefs."During the Persian Gulf War, I counseled fathers and their teenage sons, informing them of their rights under law and asking them to consider the consequences and responsibilities of writing this phrase on their records.

Today, the Iraq war military deaths approach 1,700 with — almost never mentioned —an estimated 100,000 Iraqi civilians killed. Nobody counts Iraqi wounded, but more than 12,000 U.S. personnel have come home legless, armless, eyeless or otherwise wounded. Enlistment is down. More than 5,000 soldiers have been classified as deserters; some of them are conscientious objectors.

My wife and I want our son to have every opportunity: comfortable shelter, healthy food, clean water, a safe neighborhood, books, quality day care and excellent public schooling. But we also want him to have full citizenship — intelligent, engaged citizenship that points him toward both conscientious objection to war and political engagement with his government.

Yet the government's colonizing of public schools, the moral irresponsibility of elected officials and the cowardice of too many administrators and teachers to question our government add up to systematic accommodation of efforts by military recruiters to exploit children's naiveté, ignorance and impulse to self-sacrifice.

The No Child Left Behind law allows recruiters not only access to high schoolers on campus but requires schools to share their addresses and telephone numbers with the military. It puts the onus on parents to actively opt out of this otherwise unchallenged indoctrination scheme. The law presumes parents' willingness to allow recruiters to get at their children. It favors pro-military indoctrination absent opposing perspectives.

My wife and I will teach our son to recognize the military scam, to challenge the pitch, to be skeptical about flag waving, uniforms and ridiculous promises. He'll need to be armed against the recruiters, prepared to exercise intellectual self-defense. It is a lot to ask of a child, but it may save his life, and the lives of others.

I see him in a crowded school auditorium, flags and bunting all around. Then I see my kid raising his hand to challenge the uniformed man on stage who is promising kids glory, college education and popularity, but never mentioning killing and dying.

It's impossible to inoculate a child completely from the horrors of militarism and its misguided ideals of service, its putative duty to kill others and to be killed in the name of national chauvinism, nostalgia or corporate hegemony. So we will help him.

Along with his other life documents and files — vaccination records, the Social Security card issued at his birth, his first "ouchie" notification from preschool, passport, report cards, awards — he'll have a conscientious objector file. Contents so far include photographs of him in his stroller at antiwar marches, standing in solidarity with striking supermarket workers, wearing his peace sign T-shirt, napping in his mother's arms at candlelight vigils, attending teach-ins and rallies, and standing in line with Dad at the Red Cross bloodmobile.

We'll document his participation in peaceful, alternative service to humanity: canned food and clothing drives for our local Catholic Worker, building trails for the Sierra Club, beach cleanups, voter registration. He'll learn to answer the bullies and sadists who have somehow coerced, shamed, flattered and lied our nation into believing patriotic service means murder on behalf of state power. Speaking truth to power, the Quakers call it.

My son may eventually choose otherwise when it comes to military service, but he will know that resistance is an option, and that thinking about one's allegiances is a requirement of citizenship.

Holocaust Survivor Says He's Leaving the U.S.

by Joey Picador -- http://www.justicefornone.com

One of our neighbors is moving. I've been in this neighborhood for about six years now, but didn't really know them very well at all - just waves and nods, mostly. So I heard the moving van pull up this morning. When I got home this evening I happened to spy my neighbor (he's like 85 years old - I don't know exactly, but he's old, talks and moves very slowly) standing on the sidewalk next to the van. I walked over and shook his hand, and we started talking. I asked him where he was moving, and he said, "Back to Germany."I had been stationed in Germany for two years while in the military, so I lit up, and commented about how beautiful the country was, and inquired if he was going back because he missed it."No," he answered me. "I'm going back because I've seen this before."

He then commenced to explain that when he was a kid, he watched with his family in fear as Hitler's government committed atrocity after atrocity, and no one was willing to say anything. He said the news refused to question the government, and the ones who did were not in the newspaper business much longer. He said good neighbors, people he had known all his life, turned against his family and other Jews, grabbing on to the hate and superiority "as if they were starved for it" (his words).

He said he was too old to see it happen right in front of his eyes again, and too old to do anything about it, so he was taking his family back to Europe on Thursday where they would be safe from George W. Bush and his neocons. He seemed resolute, but troubled, nonetheless, as if being too young on one end and too old on the other to fight what he saw happening was wearing on him.

I gotta tell you - it was chilling. I let him talk, and the whole time, my gut was churning, like I had mutated butterflies in my stomach. When he was finished, he shook my hand, gripping it really hard, until his knuckles turned white and he was shaking. He looked me in the eyes, hard, and said, "I will pray for your family and your country." He let go of my hand and hobbled away. I have related this event to you in the hopes it will serve as a cautionary anecdote about the state of our Union, and to illustrate the path we Americans are being led down by a group of fanatics bent on global economic and military dominion.

When a man who survived the fruits of fascism decides its time to leave THIS country because he's seeing the same patterns that led to the Holocaust and other Nazi horrors beginning to form here, it is time for us to recognize the underlying evil inherent in the actions of those who claim they work for all Americans, and for all mankind. And it is incumbent upon all Americans, Red and Blue, Republican and Democrat, to stop them.

Remembering the Dead -- Forgetting the Living

Remembering the Dead – Forgetting the Living
By: Jack Dalton

Here we are again, another Memorial Day weekend. Lots of flags will be flown; lots of speeches will be given; cemeteries will be visited; tears will be shed; lots of picnics and auto races will take place; most will talk sadly of the “fallen” whose graves will be adorned with plenty of flowers. The dead and fallen will be honored as America’s heroes in such a manner as to imply that it is dying for the country that is the greatest honor one may achieve.

While I agree that those who have given their lives should be remembered--I will as a lot of my friends are in those graves; but then I remember them every day of the week not just on one day of the year. Mostly though, I remember the living. I will remember them this Sunday in an hour long talk (radio) I will be giving on this—see details at the end of this post.

I remember that another generation of this nation is being sacrificed on the alter of war as was the case with Vietnam, Gulf War 1, Bosnia, and now Iraq and Afghanistan. The broken bodies, minds and spirits that came back from those wars were and still are being forgotten. Tossed aside by a V.A. that is not there to help put them back together and a congress that talks a lot about this nation’s veterans, but that does nothing to create positive affective change for those that have borne the brunt of the illegal wars they keep sending this nation into.

In fact the head of the V.A. recently stated that payments to veterans “are a threat to our national security.” That was repeated on the floor of the House of Representatives.

So while you have your memorials “honoring the dead” try and give some thought to the living. Remember the 85,000 that have come back from Iraq seeking care at the V.A., over half with PTSD, which has not been able to care for the Vietnam vets or the first Gulf War vets; and then there is the DU contamination no one wants to talk about. So while you remember the dead, remember the living.

The dead we cannot help; the living we can help. We can help to bring them home from Iraq and the sooner rather than later. How many more tombstones must there be? How many more people like Camilo Mejas, Kevin Benderman, Darrell Anderson, Pablo Paredes, Trent Helmkamp, Carl Webb, Adam Mowery are going to have to face criminal charges for refusing to participate in this BushCo war of choice in Iraq? (see here for active duty war resisters)

This and other issues I will be speaking on and about this Sunday, May 29th for an hour on a radio station in Pa. Here is the info from the station. It is a local AM station talk show but it will be available on the internet. It is a call-in show. Even though it is Memorial Day Sunday, and in the middle of the afternoon, no matter to me, I’ll take every opportunity that presents itself to speak on this war in Iraq and the treatment of veterans.

The show can be heard over the radio on KDKA 1020 on the am dial. They may listen on the web at http://www.kdkaradio.com/
The numbers are 412 333-KDKA (5352) or 1 877 855-5352.
The show starts at 4 PM eastern or whenever Pirate baseball ends and your segment will be on from 6:05 until 7 PM eastern.

In Support of Sibel Edmonds

In Support of Sibel Edmonds

In the upcoming days the POAC will be working with Sibel Edmonds to help her gain public support and to put pressure on lawmakers to address the circumstances around her case. Sibel Edmonds began working for the FBI shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks, translating top-secret documents pertaining to suspected terrorists. She was fired in the spring of 2002 after reporting her concerns about sabotage, intimidation, corruption and incompetence to superiors. She first gained wide public attention in October of that year when she appeared on 60 Minutes on CBS and charged that the FBI, State Department, and Pentagon had been infiltrated by Turkish individuals suspected of ties to terrorism. On October 18, 2002, at the request of FBI Director Robert Mueller, Attorney General Ashcroft imposed a gag order on Ms. Edmonds, citing possible damage to diplomatic relations or national security. Edmonds is a key witness in a pending class-action suit filed by 9/11 families against the government. We have a page put together regarding her case here:http://www.oldamericancentury.org/edmonds.htmI've done three things and I'm asking everyone reading this to do the same. What I need from you:1) Sign the online petition:http://www.petitiononline.com/deniz18/petition.html.2) Make a donation to her defense fundhttp://www.justacitizen.com/JustaCitizen-defense_fund.htm3) Contact your legislator and tell them that you want justice for Sibel Edmonds and that you want the issues that she has risen to be investigated. If you've never contacted your reps before, now is a great opportunity to start, once you do it for the first time, it becomes addictive and you'll find yourself making sure your voice is heard more and more often. You can go to this page and read more. There is a little box where you canfill in your zip code and you will be taken to a page that allows you to email your representatives.http://tinyurl.com/buve2There's a second part. Emails and online petitions are easy to ignore. Phone calls are not. Call your senator. The phone number to the senate is easy to remember and makes lots of sense: 1-877-SOB-U-SOB (See, it makes sense, doesn't it.)

Leave My Child Alone! Stop Recruiting in Our Schools!

Leave My Child Alone! Stop Recruiting in Our Schools!
By: Jack Dalton

By now it is pretty much common knowledge that the DoD – Department of War misnamed Department of Defense – and the Pentagon, thanks to the so-called and misnamed (ALL)No-Child(ern)-Left-Behind Act, are targeting this nations children for enlistment into the military while they are still in school. All personal records for each child on file with every school that receives federal funds must be made available to the military recruiters at that school. Any and all schools that violate that by not making the records available, according to the “law” will lose their federal funding.

This really brings the entire concept of the “law” and the “rule of law” into question, does it not? But that is for another discussion.

The recruitment practices of military recruiters have of late been under serious scrutiny as one report after another surfaces about the “misadventures” of the recruiters: lies, forged documents, rapes and the list is seemingly endless. Just a cursory search on any of the internet search engines will bear this out.

Former Marine recruiter, Jim Massey, now an anti-war activist, has stated many, many times about the lies, coercion, and other such “techniques” that are employed by recruiters to meet their “quotas.” That those “techniques” described by Massey are wide spread is now beyond doubt, by anyone. The DoD and the Pentagon both have recently acknowledged that “Houston—we have a problem!”

The question is: what if anything past putting on a show, will they do about this problem? Given how the Dod and Pentagon deal with other problems with and in the military, like the systemic problem of rape, which after 19 investigations over the past 18 years and many nice sounding speeches, continues to not only be a wide-spread problem but is increasing in numbers! I bring this up due to the simple fact that recruiters are being arrested for raping young women they are attempting to recruit!

The military is having major problems with getting new recruits as well as retaining those already in the military and this is becoming a bigger problem the longer BushCo continues articulating “perpetual war for perpetual peace.” Even those in the military currently are beginning to see thru the smokescreen of deception being presented by BushCo and they are leaving the military in wholesale numbers.

In an attempt to make up for those decreased numbers, the DoD and Pentagon will continue to target the poor and the young. You, who have children, have got to ask yourself: what do you want for your children? What kind of life do you want to see them have? Then you must ask yourself if sending them to an unjust war of choice that this nation was lied and deceived into fits what you envision for them.

If you have problems with recruiters in the nation’s schools then I strongly urge you, those with children and those who do not but still find this unacceptable to join me in joining the efforts of “Leave My Child Alone”, “Citizen Soldier” and “Not in Our Name” demanding to get recruiters out of our schools! And I do mean demanding!

The Great Power Grab--"Let's Make a Deal"

The Great Power Grab and All for the “Good” of the American People
By: Jack Dalton

I’ve been sitting here listening to all the nice sounding words spewing forth from some of our “esteemed” senators over the so-called “agreement” just reached about judicial nominees, filibusters, and the Trent Lott named, “nuclear option” to eliminate senate judicial filibusters.

One of ‘things’ that really stands out to me is simply this: the extreme right of the Republican Party is not satisfied with “winning” some of the time; is not satisfied with “winning” the overwhelming majority of the time; the only thing that will satisfy them is “winning” 100% of the time on every single thing they want to super-impose upon us all.

Priscilla Owen, William H. Pryor, Janice Rogers Brown ( see profiles of these and other judicial nominees here and here ) all three of whom have been “vigorously” opposed by senate “democrats” will get now a rubber stamped into a life-time seat on our federal courts—oops, their federal courts.

From the very start, this was, and still is about a lot more than just these three or some of the others still waiting in the wings—all of which it appears will now “win” senate approval. This is about the vacancies that are coming up in the Supreme Court. BushCo (my pet name for that marvelous mob of Mayberry Machiavelli’s) has had the eye on the Supreme Court from day one.

Gain control of the Supreme Court, control of all three branches of government will then be complete. You say I am making too much of this? You say I am pushing a panic button? You say I am taking this too an absurd conclusion?

To those who think or say that I remind them of this: “The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, self-appointed, or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.” James Madison, Federalist Paper 47

While the specter of what Bill Frist had planned to eliminate the opposition filibustering judicial nominees was not a good one to contemplate, let alone have to deal with; the Democratic Party caving in to the extortion is worse. They thru their “compromise” have helped to insure the completion of the radical rights three way power grab.

This is just one more thing convincing me that we only have one party in this country with only minor differences in the opposing ends of the same stick—the one we keep getting in the back. They care more about “preserving the institution” of the senate than they do about the people whose name they so freely and constantly invoke. How can giving away the courts be in the “interest of the American people?”

In 1935, Sinclair Lewis wrote his novel, “It Can’t Happen Here.” A “fictional” account of what amounts to a fascist take-over of this country. I wonder what the title of a sequel would be if Sinclair Lewis were alive today? “The 15% Solution: A History of American Fascism, 2001—2022” another fictional account of the rise of fascism by constitutional means which so perfectly describes this nation today since 9/11 it is frightening. Especially considering it was written years before 9/11 ever happened.

“Those who believe a police state can't happen here are poor students of history. Every government, democratic or not, is capable of tyranny. We must understand this if we hope to remain a free people.” (Ron Paul, R-Tx, Dec. 2004—he’s one of the only republicans in congress with some sense of integrity).

The last thing needed to permanently secure power with some air of internal legitimacy by Hitler and the Nazi’s over Germany and the German people were the courts. These they stacked and then completely took over, and using their constitution to do it. If you want to secure complete power and control over that which you govern, control of the courts is an absolute must. This is about gaining so much power and control everyone will be forced to live according to the world view these nut jobs have; and they will have the courts to back them up.

If I sound like someone screaming “the sky is falling” so be it. I just can’t stress the danger we face with this power grab for the courts. There will nothing to stand between people and government/corporate predators. The very people that lied this nation into invading Iraq and then lied about lying. These are the people who determine whom will sit as life-time judges on U.S. federal courts.

Unlike the House, the Senate was constructed by the constitutional framers as an unrepresentative body, with each state, regardless of population, allotted two senators. Currently, the Republicans have 55 senators who represent only 45% of the country. The Senate creates its own rules, and the filibuster can only be stopped by a super-majority of 60 votes. Historically, it was used by southern senators to block civil rights legislation. In the first two years of the Clinton presidency, the Republicans deployed 48 filibusters, more than in the entire previous history of the Senate, to make the new Democratic chief executive appear feckless. The strategy was instrumental in the Republican capture of the Congress in 1994. By depriving the Democrats of the filibuster, Bush intended to transform the Senate into his rubber stamp. Deliberate Deception--Bush & Iraq: How Much More Evidence is Needed?

Deliberate Deception—Bush & Iraq: How Much More Evidence is Needed?
By: Jack Dalton

That the single most serious decision which anyone calling them self the president can make is the decision to go to war, is beyond question. That George W. Bush & Company were formulating plans to invade Iraq even prior to 9/11 is also beyond question; at least for those willing to spend the time looking at the wide body of available evidence.

Paul O’Neill, who was Secretary of the Treasury until Bush replaced him, was very clear when he stated that invading Iraq was on the table from the first day Bush took office. Richard Clarke who was the “Terrorism Czar” was also replaced by Bush. Writing in his book, “Against All Enemies” he is very clear in explaining how the only thing Bush wanted to discuss, or hear, was invading Iraq.

The recent articles by Juan Cole, “The Lie That Led to War” and Robert Parry’s article, “For Bush, Iraq Lies are Fundamental” detailing the trail of BushCo deceptions that ultimate led to this war of choice and the slaughter of over 100,000 Iraqi’s with untold wounded in mind and body; as well as over 1800 Americans dead and up to 85,000 seeking medical care—these are numbers far in excess of what the Pentagon is reporting.

None of this is new information. What is new are the memos recently released which give additional confirmation to the simple fact, Bush & Co wanted to invade Iraq and nothing was going to stop them.

The Downing Street Memo, recently leaked, reveals that President George W. Bush decided to overthrow Iraqi President Saddam Hussein in summer 2002 and—determined to ensure that U.S. intelligence data supported his policies—"fixed" the intelligence and facts relevant to WMD.” To date, three weeks after the release and confirmation of the memos, the media, especially broadcast media, has been silent!

It never ceases to amaze me what broadcast media in the U.S. considers “news-worthy” and what is not; what the public should be informed about and what the public does not need to know. We were lied into war and the media is complicit in this criminal enterprise know as the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

The group, Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, has one of the best and most complete analyses on the “Smoking Gun Memo” and the lack of media attention in this nation. Instead of properly informing us, the people of this nation, print and broadcast media have become nothing more than mouth-pieces for Bush and “The New World Order” as articulated by groups such as the Project for the New American Century and the American Enterprise Institute.

I’ve left the entirety of the FAIR report and call to take action here rather than just provide the link, which is above. Information to enable you to contact various media outlets are provided at the conclusion of this. Remember that the “greatest sedition is silence.” Join with me and do “not go quietly into that good night…” as our continued silence and inactivity will surely be the death of us all.

Network Viewers Still in the Dark on "Smoking Gun Memo"Print media continue to downplay story

May 20, 2005 Following FAIR's call for more mainstream coverage of the "smoking gun memo"--the secret British document containing new evidence that the Bush administration manipulated intelligence to justify its plan to invade Iraq--a steady trickle of news reports have appeared. But that coverage has been downplayed in general and is still completely absent from the nightly news. The Los Angeles Times published a page 3 story on the memo on May 12, and the Washington Post ran a page 18 story the following day. More than two weeks after the story broke in the Sunday Times of London (5/1/05), it finally made the front page of a major U.S. newspaper, the Chicago Tribune (5/17/05).
After referring to the memo (5/2/05) in a story on the British electoral campaign, the New York Times failed to report on the document's implications about the Bush administration until today (5/20/05); the one-column story didn't mention the manipulation of intelligence until the eighth paragraph. (Times columnist Paul Krugman also discussed the memo on the paper's opinion page on May 16.)

The Washington Post's ombudsman, Michael Getler, who the previous week (5/8/05) had mentioned reader complaints about the Post's lack of memo coverage without evaluating their substance, revisited the issue with a much more critical eye in his most recent column (5/15/05). (The ombud gave back-handed credit to FAIR and the group Media Matters for America--both "self-described media watchdog organizations"--for prompting him to delve into the story.) Getler wrote that Post editors initially told him they didn't pursue the story because they were "tied up with election coverage"--this despite the fact that the leaked memo became a major election story in Britain and likely contributed to Tony Blair's weak returns. When he questioned them again after the email campaign, Getler wrote, "editors agreed that this story should be covered and said they were going to go back and do that"; the Post's May 13 story followed. Getler called investigation of the memo's conclusions "journalistically mandatory" and suggested that the Post story should have been placed on the front page.

While the memo has begun to get wider coverage in print, broadcasters have maintained a near silence on the issue. The story has turned up in a few short CNN segments (Crossfire, 5/13/05; Live Sunday, 5/15/05; Wolf Blitzer Reports, 5/16/05), but the only mention of the memo FAIR found on the major broadcast networks came on ABC's Sunday morning show This Week (5/15/05), in which host George Stephanopoulos questioned Sen. John McCain about its contents. When McCain declared that he didn't "agree with it" and defended the Bush administration's decision to go to war, Stephanopoulos didn't question him further. A look at the nightly news reveals not a single story aired about the memo and its implications.

When finally questioned by CNN (5/16/05), White House press secretary Scott McClellan claimed he hadn't seen the memo, but that "the reports" about it were "flat-out wrong." British government officials, however, did not dispute the contents of the memo--which can be read in full online at http://downingstreetmemo.com/ --and a former senior American official called it "an absolutely accurate description of what transpired" (Knight Ridder, 5/6/05). The Chicago Tribune (5/17/05) named several factors that had caused a "less than robust discussion" of the smoking gun memo: Aside from the White House's denials, and the media's slow reaction, the paper asserted that "the public generally seems indifferent to the issue or unwilling to rehash the bitter prewar debate over the reasons for the war." Of course, it's hard to judge the public's interest in a story the media have largely shielded them from.

Buy Your Gas at Citgo: Join the Buy-cott--by: Jeff Cohen

Looking for an easy way to protest Bush foreign policy week after week? And an easy way to help alleviate global poverty? Buy your gasoline at Citgo stations.

(for Jeff Cohen's full story: http://www.commondreams.org/views05/0516-25.htm )

Of the top oil producing countries in the world, only one is a democracy with a president who was elected on a platform of using his nation's oil revenue to benefit the poor. The country is Venezuela. The President is Hugo Chavez. Call him "the Anti-Bush."

Citgo is a U.S. refining and marketing firm that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil company. Money you pay to Citgo goes primarily to Venezuela -- not Saudi Arabia or the Middle East. There are 14,000 Citgo gas stations in the US. (Click here http://www.citgo.com/CITGOLocator/StoreLocator.jsp to find one near you.)

By buying your gasoline at Citgo, you are contributing to the billions of dollars that Venezuela's democratic government is using to provide health care, literacy and education, and subsidized food for the majority of Venezuelans.

The "Neither Party" -- Now that's an idea

Anyone that has been reading what I write understands what I think about the two party politics in this country. I am of the opinion we only have one party in this country with opposing ends involved in one big game of “power, power, who gets the power?” In the meantime, we the people of this country keep getting “it” in the posterior by the very people claiming the name of the American people with all they do. Check out the “Neither Party.” I have not had the time as yet to check out everything within its “platform.” But what I have read really sparks my interest.

I like the concept as I firmly believe an alternative to what we have is an absolute must. Check them out below.

The following two articles are more than just a little important. The first one was written by Anwaar Hussain on his blog "Fountainhead" and is titled ""Of Nuclear Giants and Ethical Infants:" the second is put out by Media Matters for America which lists the "Top Ten Filibuster Falsehoods. Both deal with two different topics but are related insofar as neither subject is reported by what weakly passes for "media" in this country. Both are very thought provoking to say the least. Both point out the debths to which ethics, integrity and honor have fallen by the way-side here in this land, this nation/state we call America.

The UN has been a study in hypocrisy since its founding. All united under one council, except for the big five who are above the law, is as ironic as it is laughable. No reform can be suggested as no reform is possible when the suggestion itself can be vetoed by any of the Big Five.Only because the five “founding” nations have a veto, they have had an international body that they have been ruthlessly using to push their own agendas and bully other nations into doing what the “collective” wants. One fervently wishes for the day when the real collective does finally wake up. For on that day the Big Five will have to, for once, use their veto power to actually protect themselves from the wrath of that real collective. That will also be the day when the John Boltons of this world will shine in their true luster. In a world beset by so many conflicts, and the only super power having gone berserk to the extent that it is being seen more as a part of the problem than the solution, it is hard to look for silver lining to the dark clouds of gloom. With the chilling nuclear saber rattling by so many actors on the world stage, and the games that these nuclear giants and ethical infants want to play, we may all end up in John James Ingalls democracy of the dead in not too distant a future…with all men equal at last.Despite being a military man, General Omar N. Bradley captured the very essence of it all when he said, “The world has achieved brilliance without wisdom, power without conscience. Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants.”

The Top 10 filibuster falsehoods
With Senate debate on two of President Bush's most controversial judicial nominees beginning May 18, the heated rhetoric over the so-called "nuclear option" to ban Senate filibusters on judicial nominations has reached its boiling point. The rules of the Senate thus far remain intact, but filibuster opponents have pulled all rhetorical stops, advancing numerous falsehoods and distortions, and, as Media Matters for America documents below, the media have too often perpetuated that misinformation by unskeptically, and sometimes even deliberately, repeating it. The "Illusion" of Two "Parties"

The “Illusion” of Two “Parties”
By: Jack Dalton

Thanks to the "recently released “memos” between the BushCo camp and the Blair “brigade” there is no longer any doubt they “cooked the books” on the intelligence to fit their already in place plans to invade Iraq. For some of us, this is just icing on the cake as there was already a wide body of evidence in the public domain articulating how “intelligence”--and I use that term loosely-- was being deliberately distorted and made to fit pre-determined plans to invade Iraq. Former Secretary of the Treasury, Paul O’Neill, in “The Price of Loyalty” shows as early as February, 2002, a deliberate, concerted effort was being put forth to “justify”—also used loosely—invading Iraq.

On March 20, 2003, as you know, Iraq was invaded and is now occupied. Since then, tens upon tens of thousands of Iraqi’s have been killed, with an untold number wounded; with the number of Americans killed moving toward 1,700; and the actual number of total medical evacuations for all reasons, closer to 30,000 (that number includes the 17,000 that the Pentagon said were evacuated but not “wounded”—a great number of which were for psychological reasons). That is for another discussion, so on to the “illusion.”

The “smoking gun” memos were made public on May 5th, less than two weeks ago. 88 members of the House of Representatives signed a joint letter demanding the White House explain them. After all, everyone around Bush, and Bush included, stated over and over again that there were no plans in place to invade Iraq; and that they would make all decisions based on the “best available intelligence.”

If the members of the House were aware of the memos, it stands to reason the members of the Senate would also have been aware of the memos. I clearly remember, and not in the distant past, many voices of outrage coming from Senate Democrats over the manner in which this nation was lead into this BushCo war of choice.

A few days ago, these Democratic Party voices of opposition had the chance to, in part, show “what they are made of” and take a stand against the $82 billion supplemental earmarked for Iraq, and everything it represents. Not only would passage of the supplemental throw additional huge sums of “good money after bad,” but tucked away inside it is an amendment that will allow the Department of Homeland security the power to waive laws with no oversight what-so-ever.

“A stroke of the pen makes it final: President Bush signed into law the Iraq war supplemental, which includes a controversial provision giving the secretary of homeland security the power to waive all law when securing U.S. borders.” Now here’s the kicker—when the Senate votes were tallied up, the supplemental and all the tucked away provisions like the one above, the vote was unanimous--100 to 0.

If ever there existed a time the mandated a strong, determined and uncompromising voice of reason in our congress, especially the Senate, it is now—but they were nowhere to be found.

At the same time the Senate Democrats, in total, were joining their Republican comrades in passing this piece of “legislation”—again a term used loosely—it was simultaneously announced by the Pentagon they would be back in August for more.

I’ve said it many times and repeat it again, we only have one political party in this nation with two ends of the very same pole—the one that we, the people of this nation keep getting in the back. The silence of broadcast and print media on and about all of this especially the memos makes them, by the failure to bring this to the publics’ attention, guilty of deception by omission. The “media” has failed itself and has betrayed the people of this nation by its silence.

For those that find this unacceptable and would like to join me in letting the people in congress know just exactly how you feel and what you think of what they are doing in your name, here is the link to Congress.org. If you follow the link you will see how easy it is to contact those in congress. They need to hear from us and the more of us the better.

A few letters to editors of local as well as national newspapers wouldn’t hurt either.

Troops Out Now!

Please take a few moments and join me in joining with the Troops Out Now Coalition in demanding a complete and total withdrawl from Iraq. If I am certain of anything, I am certain of this: the longer this nation keeps sending its youth to Iraq to kill or be killed, the carnage and slaughter will only continue to rise.

To continue sending U.S. forces into Iraq behind the knowledge that BushCo and Blair "cooked the intel books" to fit their foregone conclusions as stated in their own memo's, is nothing but the sanctioning of mass murder.

The Troops Out Now Coalition (TONC) wholeheartedly and unreservedly joins the activists and groups who are calling for a united mobilization against the war in the fall. The absence of such unity amongst the anti-war coalitions only serves to demoralize rank and file anti-war activists and local forces across the country. The grassroots of the movement are looking to those of us who make decisions to put our differences aside in the interests of the struggle to get the U.S. the hell out of Iraq.

Achieving unity isn't easy but the power of unity is the thing that will give everyone the confidence to do what needs to be done. Moreover, the people of Iraq and throughout the Middle East need the movement in this country to unite. The whole world is looking to us to do it. TONC welcomes the sentiments of all who have signed on to the unity statement that is being circulated by USLAW.

TONC would add to that call that the movement needs to reach out in a more serious way not only to trade unionists that are active in the anti-war movement, but also to working people and people of color. In the Million Worker March Movement you have trade unionists that are people of color at the helm.

These trade unionists are leading the way in helping to bring the workers movement and the anti-war movement together. Let us make sure that our appeal extends to them as well as others including immigrants who are all too often under-represented.

An important part of forging any meaningful unity will, of necessity, require that the anti-war movement both acknowledges and unites with the struggle of people of color and the events that carry their message.

The call for a "Millions More March" on the tenth anniversary of the "Million Man March" has gone out far and wide. The Millions More March will extend over 3 days next fall, October 14, 15 and 16, including a massive march on Washington DC. It goes without saying that many of us will be pre-occupied with this important mobilization. This is something that needs to be respected.

TONC believes that the time has come for all of us to unite around the demand to bring the troops home immediately. This in no way means that other demands should not be put forth.

We absolutely must talk about the war budget and how it's robbing workers and poor people.

We must talk about the prospect of the draft being revived. We must find ways of reaching out to resisters inside the military.

Moreover, we don't believe that uniting must mean censoring, silencing or excluding the positions of those who are participating in that unity.

The antiwar movement must not turn its back on the Palestinian people and their struggle. In addition, the position that the Iraqi people have a right to resist occupation by whatever means they choose cannot be censored or excluded.

We don't think that it helps us to make no mention of the threats against Venezuela or Cuba or Iran or North Korea and simply pretend that these problems don't exist.

We believe that the movement must address the ongoing occupation of Haiti and Afghanistan; the imperialist designs on Zimbabwe, the Philippines, Colombia and all the peoples of Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Caribbean and Latin America. Others may have different priorities.

The anti-war movement must ensure that all oppressed communities have an equal place at the table, where their issues and concerns are represented.
Unity does not mean uniformity--the main thing is for the basis of unity to be clear.

It's not necessary for us to ask of each other that we forget neither our differences nor the unpleasantness of past conflicts. All that is required is that we not let any of that get in the way of joining hands to grasp the opportunities that only unity makes possible.

There is a high road. On that road, questions are answered, problems are solved and the means and methods necessary to move forward are found.

Nothing is more important at this moment than for all to walk together on the high road to unity. We believe that what we all do will be decisive. We must and we can stop the war and get every U.S. soldier out of Iraq.

It is up to all of us to do whatever is necessary for our movement to rise to this challenge.

TONC is holding a regional meeting on June 11. A special session of this meeting will be devoted to continuing the discussion on unity and we will be extending invitations to groups to participate in that discussion.

William Blum's Anti-Empire Report

I've read much of what Wm Blum has written; all of which is so well documented as to beyond question, at least for me. "Freeing the World to Death" and "Rogue State" are in my opinion, must reads. I really like his "Anti-Empire Report;" it gives me much to check, much to think about; as I hope it will with you.

Anti-Empire Report, No. 21, May 13,2005 by:William Blum

The American myth industryGood ol' George W. was traveling around Eastern Europe this past week celebrating the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, spouting a lot of Cold War anti-Communist myths, principal among them being:The Soviet Union signed a pact with the devil, Nazi Germany, in 1939 for no reason other than the commies and the Nazis were just two of a kind who wanted to carve up Poland together.

Without any justification, the Soviet Union occupied the three Baltic nations in 1940.Without any justification the Soviet Union occupied the rest of Eastern Europe after the Second World War. All done, apparently, because the Soviets were an expansionist, brutal empire which liked to subjugate foreign peoples for no particularly good reason; i.e., an "evil empire". "The captivity of millions in Central and Eastern Europe will be remembered as one of the greatest wrongs of history," said Bush while in Latvia.{1}

These tales are all set in marble in American media, textbooks, and folklore, but please humor me as I engage in my usual futility of trying to correct some of the official record.Much Western propaganda mileage has been squeezed out of the Soviet-German treaty of 1939. This is made possible only by entirely ignoring the fact that the Russians were forced into the pact by the repeated refusal of the Western powers, particularly the United States and Great Britain, to sign a mutual defense treaty with Moscow in a stand against Hitler.{2}

The Russians had good reasons -- their legendary international espionage being one of them -- to believe that Hitler would eventually invade them and that that would be just fine with the Western powers who, at the notorious 1938 Munich conference, were hoping to nudge Adolf eastward. (Thus it was Western "collusion" with the Nazis, not the oh-so-famous "appeasement" of them; the latter of course has been invoked over the years on numerous occasions to justify American military action against the dangerous enemy of the month.)

The Soviets, consequently, felt obliged to sign the treaty with Hitler to be able to stall for time while they built up their defenses. (Hitler, for his part, was motivated by his plans to invade Poland.) Similarly, the Western "democracies" refused to come to the aid of the socialist-leaning Spanish government under siege by the German, Italian and Spanish fascists. Hitler derived an important lesson from these happenings. He saw that for the West the real enemy was not fascism, it was communism and socialism. Stalin got the same message.

The Baltic states -- Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania -- were part of the Russian empire from 1721 up to the Russian Revolution of 1917, in the midst of World War I. When the war ended in November 1918, and the Germans had been defeated, the victorious Allies (US, Great Britain, France, et al.) permitted/encouraged the German forces to remain in the Baltics for a full year to crush the spread of Bolshevism there; this, with ample military assistance from the Allies.

In each of the three republics, the Germans installed collaborators in power who declared their independence from the Bolshevik state which, by this time, was so devastated by the World War, the revolution, and the civil war (exacerbated and prolonged by Allied intervention) that it had no choice but to accept the fait accompli. The rest of the fledgling Soviet Union had to be saved. To at least win some propaganda points from this unfortunate state of affairs, the Russians announced that they were relinquishing the Baltic republics "voluntarily" in line with their principles of anti-imperialism and self-determination. But is should not be surprising that the Russians continued to regard the Baltics as a rightful part of their nation or that they waited until they were powerful enough to reclaim the territory.

Within the space of 25 years, Western powers invaded Russia three times -- World War I, 1914-18; the "intervention" of 1918-20; and World War II, 1939-45 -- inflicting some 40 million casualties in the two world wars alone. (The Soviet Union lost considerably more people on its own land than it did abroad. There are not too many great powers who can say that.) To carry out these invasions, the West used Eastern Europe as a highway. Should it be any cause for wonder that after World War II the Soviets wanted to close this highway down?

In almost any other context, Americans would have no problem in seeing this as an act of self defense. But in the context of the Cold War such thinking could not find a home in mainstream discourse. Faith-based economics: Our salvation cometh from the private sectorFrom the Washington Post: April 9 - "Stocks fell yesterday even though oil prices were down for a fifth straight day."May 12 - "Stocks bounce back as oil prices decline".

I present such information to try to induce some skepticism about the many economic ideas or "laws" that we're all raised to believe. These ideas are a form of control over people's thinking, to pre-empt the tendency some might have to question the wisdom and real beneficiary of events in the economic sphere. The ideas, we are assured, are in the natural order of things, the default setting for the universe, a matter of mathematics that can't be altered to suit the needs or aspirations of the community.Like the law of supply and demand.

As consumers struggle painfully with high gasoline prices, ExxonMobil announces that its revenue for the first quarter totaled more than $82 billion, with its profit 44 percent higher than the corresponding quarter a year ago. But can one argue that ExxonMobil should therefore perform a marvelous public service and reduce the price of gasoline? Of course not, the "law" of supply and demand dictates that they are fully entitled to this money. You wouldn't want them to break the law, would you?

Another economic idea that is rarely questioned is that of private efficiency vs. government inefficiency. How often have we all read of a call for certain government enterprises to be privatized because they were "inefficient"? To many it must seem so right. But then shouldn't private enterprises which are inefficient be nationalized? The housing industry in the United States, for example, is clearly unable to make a decent profit and at the same time provide affordable housing for all of the American people. Not even close. Many millions are either homeless, living in terribly crowded conditions to save money, or spending anywhere from 30 to 70 percent of their disposable income for rent, thus forced to cut back on food and other necessities.

The airlines are another case in point. An utter, maddening mess. We desperately need a subsidized national airline. The best airlines in the world used to be the European national airlines like British Airways, KLM, Air France, SAS. Then Margaret Thatcher came along and instigated "revolutionary" changes. Air travel hasn't recovered from them yet. Health care delivery is of course another example. Need I go into detail about the (literally) deadly inefficiency of that enterprise?

Look at how our national parks have been laid out by civil servants not pressured by the market: camping grounds, boating areas, unspoiled hiking trails, fishing areas, artificial lakes, tastefulness of selling sites, nature studies, etc. And look at the commercial areas in any city. Who would you rather have do your planning?

Washington's bombing targets

For many years, going back to at least the Korean war, it's been fairly common for accusations to be made against the United States that it chooses as its bombing targets only people of color, those of the Third World, or Muslims. Many anti-war activists, in the US and abroad, as well as Muslims have made such an accusation. But it must be remembered that in 1999 one of the most sustained and ferocious American bombing campaigns ever was carried out against the people of the former Yugoslavia -- white, European, Christians.

The United States is in fact an equal-opportunity bomber. The only qualifications for a country to become an American target appear to be: (A)It poses a sufficient obstacle to the desires of the American Empire; (B)It is virtually defenseless against aerial attack.

The hopeless Democrats, againOn April 23, speaking in Minneapolis before the ACLU, Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean declared: "Now that we're there [in Iraq], we're there and we can't get out. ... I hope the President is incredibly successful with his policy now." That can mean one of two things: It could mean that Dean believes that the intentions of the Bush administration in Iraq are honorable, that they mean well by the Iraqi people, that the bombing, invasion, occupation, torture, and daily humiliation have all been acts of love; and that oil and the care and feeding of American corporations play no role.

Or it can mean that he supports the objectives of US imperialism and is opposed to abandoning them.During the 2004 presidential primaries it was stated repeatedly that Dean was "against the Iraq war". I was never interested enough in him or the Democrats to track down just what this really meant, to pinpoint precisely what the basis of his opposition to the war was, but I assumed it was not anything approaching the unequivocal opposition that characterized the majority of the anti-war movement, including many of Dean's supporters. I hope that their disillusionment has at least been enlightening.

Yet another glorious chapter in the Wonderful War on TerrorismVice President Cheney, speaking of Saddam Hussein and his alleged terrorist allies, told an audience on January 10, 2003: "The gravity of the threat we face was underscored in recent days when British police arrested ... suspected terrorists in London and discovered a small quantity of ricin, one of the world's deadliest poisons." A week later at the White House, press secretary Ari Fleischer told reporters, "When you read about people in London being arrested for possession of ricin, there clearly remain people in the world who want to inflict as much harm as they can on the Western world and on others."

Then, in his much-publicized February 5 speech to the UN Security Council, Secretary of State Colin Powell put up a slide that linked a "U.K. poison cell" to alleged master terrorist Abu Musab Zarqawi. After the war in Iraq began in March and US troops seized a northern Iraq camp linked to Zarqawi, Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told CNN: "We think that's probably where the ricin that was found in London came [from]. ... At least the operatives and maybe some of the formulas came from this site."

On April 13, 2005, at the London trial of the arrested "terrorists", it was disclosed that there had been a mistake. No ricin had actually been found in their apartment and all charges pertaining to this were dropped. It turned out, moreover, that the claim about ricin having been found in January 2003 had been shown to be false that very same day by chemical weapons experts.{3}In the run-up to Washington's war against the people of Iraq the principal need of those planning and selling the war was to whip up enough fear and loathing so that the American people would buy it.

Thus it was that a great big stew was cooked up ... September 11 ... terrorists ... chemical weapons ... al Qaeda ... Iraq ... Abu Musab Zarqawi ... biological weapons ... Saddam Hussein ... Osama bin Laden ... ricin ... imminent danger ... nuclear danger ... all part of one vast conspiracy, all part of a very filling dish to feed the public. It's comforting now to realize how many people decided that the meal did not pass the smell test.

Here Come Da Judge, There Go Da Courts--and any Semblance of Justice

Here Come Da Judge, There Go Da Courts—and any Semblance of Justice

John Jay was the first Chief Justice of this nation’s newly created Supreme Court. That was in the 1780’s. As Chief Justice he made a statement that echo’s what we are faced with today: “the people that own the country ought to rule the country.” That right there, at least from where I sit, is the “battle” we are in right now. That “fight” over who will rule the nation was ramped up in 1886, when a Supreme Court Clerk, John Davis, added a forward to a Supreme Court decision in Santa Clara County vs. Southern Pacific Railroad, which in effect declared the “personhood” of corporations. As the case had nothing to do with corporate personhood but was a taxation issue, Davis waited over a year, until the Justice that wrote the opinion in the case died, before he published the document. It has been a downhill slide ever since. (See: Thom Hartmann’s Unequal Protection)

Bear with me on this trip down memory lane as it is very relevant in terms of what we are faced with today (I’m taking the long way ‘round the barn). Especially in terms of the power grab by the “radical revolutionary movement” that backs and supports Bush, more commonly referred to as the “neo-cons.” I have a lot of other names for that group but will refrain from using them here.

Back to John Davis: He was the number two man at the State Department during the Grant administration, which, up until G.W. Bush was propelled into the White House, was without a doubt the most corrupt administration in the nation’s history. Davis was also the president of a railroad company and at the time it was the railroad companies that essentially “owned” the nation and the government. The graft and corruption was at a level not seen before, or since; at least until now. It is here that you may substitute the name of Dick Cheney for John Davis, and “Halliburton, Bechtel, etc” for railroads, as the similarities are too similar to ignore. Eventually Davis was impeached, then was given a Presidential Pardon” and twenty years later was a Supreme Court clerk.

Keep in mind that the so-called advisors who are the heart of the “Bush inner circle” are duplicitous carbon-copies of John Davis in many ways. The commonality is simply this; they all invoke the name of the American people while what they do is totally about securing, maintaining and increasing their power over the very people whose name they constantly invoke.

It is thru decisions rendered by our federal courts and the judges that sit on them that we, the people of this nation, are protected from the over-reaching of government, abuses of power both public and private (corporate). But, what if those courts which decide what is or is not legal, what is or is not constitutional, what is or is not in the best interest of the people of the nation, what if those very courts are filled with and by individuals whose allegiance is to a deeply held ideological belief system--as are those that BushCo is attempting to stack our courts with?

We in this nation have either forgotten or just flat out have tossed away the “lessons of the past” as this nation right now seems “hell bent for leather” to repeat each and every one of them. Our own history is replete with examples of the disasters that follow an ideologically driven system of federal courts. From John Jay and his ideas about an “ownership” society (sound familiar?), to John Davis, to the federal courts that effectively turned post civil-war reconstruction of the south on its head which left the “evil” southern states to “sink or swim” on their own.

Now, here we are again at the same cross-roads of the past. Only now the stakes are much higher as George W. Bush, those that surround him, and those that put him in the seat of power have raised the “bar” so to speak.

“…let us be clear with the American people what the debate over ideology in judicial nominations is about. It is not about partisan jockeying or trying to make the president look bad. It is about the role of government and whether the past seven decades of bipartisan legal achievements will survive. Right-wing activists believe Supreme Court Justices should admit the “mistakes” of the past 65 years and overturn many historic precedents.” This is what we are faced with today with our federal courts and why it is so extremely important that we oppose this attempted takeover of the courts in the strongest of terms!

We have a White House and congress that want to roll this country backwards to pre-reconstruction days. Every law, government agency, government program that was created in response to the depression of the 1930’s by the Roosevelt administration is now on the chopping block as never before in this countries history. This is the single biggest, most open grab for power entrenchment in this nation’s history; the stakes are higher than they have ever been.

For decade after decade our federal courts have made one decision after another that have placed corporate interests over the people of this nation. Civil rights are being turned upside down (free speech zones and all), environmental laws being overturned one after the other, increased secrecy by those in power, lack of government transparency, and literal criminals now setting U.S. policy (Elliott Abrams for one) and all “legal”-- so sayeth our courts.

If this BushCo take-over of the courts succeeds; if Sen. Bill Frist and his cohort of nut-jobs succeeds with their plans to overturn and re-write the senate rules on “advise and consent” on judicial nominees, we can pretty much kiss the “rule of law” and the constitution good-bye; as they will be forever re-written and changed—and not for the benefit of us, the American people.

The one single thing that secured total and complete power by Hitler and the Nazi’s over Germany and the German people was when they were able to capture the German courts. That one event gave them the air of legitimacy and legality. They then used the ideologically stacked courts to re-write and change the German constitution.
Right now, 7 of 13 federal courts are in the hands of those that would forever redefine this nation. Soon that will increase to 11 of 13 and quite possibly 13 of 13, especially if Bill Frist manages to cram the “nuclear option” down everyone’s throats. If this succeeds there will be nothing to stop those who are attempting to permanently change, redefine and secure, as Tom DeLay put it, “permanent ‘conservative’ republican rule. There is a name for “one party rule”—it’s called despotic tyranny! And we are headed right into its heart ala Bush and Company.

Everyone in the senate needs to hear from us all in demanding an end to this unprecedented power grab—and sooner rather than later. If your senator is on the list below, call, register your demand that they do not support the “nuclear option.” If your senator is not on the list below, call them anyway as they still need to hear from us. Call every day if need be…there is too much at stake…keep in mind that “The greatest Sedition is Silence.”

NE: Sen. Chuck Hagel

Calling your Senator's office is easy! The staff member that answers the phone will relay your views to the Senator. When you call, just give your name, and make sure to say you're a constituent. Then, let them know you are calling to urge your Senator to oppose the nuclear option on judges.
Other points you could mention if you like are:
The nuclear option would destroy any hope of bipartisan cooperation in the Senate
The Senate has a responsibility to carefully consider lifetime appointments and should not rubber-stamp confirmations for any White House
