The Destruction of Iraq and Our Constitutional Republic

The articles, essays and videos below are but a very, very small sample of what Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld and a dysfunctional congress are ordering the men and women in uniform to do in Iraq.

Sgt Kevin Benderman, who is doing 15 months in the Regional Correctional Facility at FT Lewis, WA, is there because as a matter of conscience, he could not obey orders to shoot children (an order that eventually led to his Conscientious Objection). Sgt Benderman’s cell mate is a 22 year old that was sent to Ft Lewis for obeying his Captains order to shoot an unarmed Iraqi civilian in his home during a midnight raid.

This is the nightmare Bush/Cheney & Co. have created for our people in uniform and it is the Iraqi people who suffer the most as a result. The day is coming that those who went to Iraq will learn as did we that went to Vietnam, that they were told the most horrendous lies in terms of Iraq and the Iraqi people; that there was no “noble mission or cause” and as such will find it almost impossible to justify their presence in Iraq. Think high levels of unresolved cognitive dissidence and PTSD. And for the Iraqi people: a land that has been destroyed by bullets, bombs and depleted uranium, not to mention White Phosphorus in Fallujah.

In the meantime, the bodies are stacking up pretty high. Is it any wonder this nation has become so despised? Send a “thank you” note to the autocratic thugs know as Bush/Cheney for all they have accomplished in 5 short years: the destruction of Iraq and our own Constitution! See David Sirota's article: "Bush's 'Need For Speed' Argument Runs Into The Truth" and, "George W. Bush: The Case for Impeachment" ... Now on to the posts: -- Jack

The Bush Administration uses double barrel propaganda today, with Mr. Bush using a prime time television address to say things like "My fellow citizens: Not only can we win the war in Iraq - we are winning the war in Iraq," and responding to negative news by saying "It does not mean that we are losing." Meanwhile, Mr. Cheney, while on a heavily guarded tour of the "Green Zone" and other locales in Iraq said today, "I think the vast majority of them think of us as liberators."…

BAGHDAD, Dec 1 (IPS) - Despite the allocation of billions of dollars of U.S. government money for "reconstruction", Iraqis are struggling to exist amidst soaring prices, unemployment, a devastated infrastructure, and cuts in services. Iraqis received a monthly food ration during the Oil for Food programme which was set up to provide relief during the sanctions against Iraq up to the invasion in 2003. The head of each family was allotted monthly food coupons for commodities like sugar, rice, tea, detergents, cooking oil, beans and baby milk…

Squeezed To Death
By: John Pilger
5- -2000

Wherever you go in Iraq's southern city of Basra, there is dust. It gets in your eyes and nose and throat. It swirls in school playgrounds and consumes children kicking a plastic ball. "It carries death," said Dr Jawad Al-Ali, a cancer specialist and member of Britain's Royal College of Physicians. "Our own studies indicate that more than 40 per cent of the population in this area will get cancer: in five years' time to begin with, then long afterwards. Most of my own family now have cancer, and we have no history of the disease. It has spread to the medical staff of this hospital. We don't know the precise source of the contamination, because we are not allowed to get the equipment to conduct a proper scientific survey, or even to test the excess level of radiation in our bodies. We suspect depleted uranium, which was used by the Americans and British in the Gulf War right across the southern battlefields."…

Torture IS an "American" Value: Reality Versus the Rhetoric
by S. Brian Willson

Instead of the recent euphemism "illegal combatants," the United State in Vietnam claimed prisoners were "criminal" and therefore exempt from Geneva Convention protections. The use of torture as a function of terror, or its equivalent in sadistic behavior, has been historic de facto U.S. policy.
