On Ending Corporate Dominance:

On Ending Corporate Dominance:

Of all we are faced with in this nation currently— double deficits created by an illegal war on Iraq and tax cuts to the rich and wealthy; declining real wages; sluggish job market; outrageously high, and rising, ‘health care’ costs; increased poverty levels for 5 consecutive years; increasing disparities in wealth; privatization of the ‘commons’ (think public water, public land, public air waves, in fact everything public is on the auction block); and the list is seemingly endless, as well as still growing—the “Personhood” of corporations is at the heart of all these problems.

For longer than I can remember, corporations have been writing the bills for congress, passing them on to those in congress who have been bought, leased or rented; republican and democrat alike), who then proceed to make the laws we must live by. Medicare; Social Security; energy policy; prescription drug bill; minimum wages; these are but a few of the corporate written bills. Then ‘they’ tell us that is what we, the American People, want as they invoke our names endlessly.

Since the Cheney/Bush Cabal stole the reigns of power in this nation, the hard-core neo-conservative/theocracy ideologues in congress saw their golden opportunity to finally initiate that which they have wanted to do for decades: “
Starve the Beast”. Deliberately create deficits so high that all spending has to be cut, all but military spending that is—it matters not to any of them that the DoD/Pentagon has “lost” $1.1 trillion in money and equipment. After all, to them any spending but military spending is a “threat to national security” as has been stated many, many times. “Kids” do say the ‘darndest’ things, do they not? Oops! I forgot—Tom DeLay, in November of 2004, after the so-called “free” election when the republicans made a clean sweep, told us, “The grown-ups are now in charge”. If this is how “grown-ups” rule, please give me ‘kids’ to govern!

The following, “Model Legal Brief to Eliminate Corporate Rights” is an absolute must read. If we are ever to get to a place where the people of this nation rule, we must of necessity strip corporations of their constitutional protections. If we do not, nothing will change from what it is currently. -- Jack

The Program on Corporations, Law & Democracy (POCLAD) is making this “Model Legal Brief to Eliminate Corporate Rights” available to help citizen groups create winning organizing strategies--by stripping constitutional protections from corporations and preventing them from governing their communities.

Richard Grossman, co-founder of POCLAD, authored the brief with Thomas Linzey, Esq., president of the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund, (CELDF) a public interest law firm in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and Dan Brannen, a Santa Fe attorney. Preface

This Brief is intended to assist communities organizing to challenge the United States government's gift of constitutional powers to property organized as corporations. Accordingly, this Brief is NOT about corporate responsibility, corporate accountability, corporate ethics, corporate codes of conduct, good corporate "citizenship," corporate crime, corporate reform, consumer protection, fixing regulatory agencies, or stakeholders.
